The Varsity Red team faced a lot of adversity that was outside of their control throughout the year. However, looking in from the outside nobody would have known. This team came together and competed at a very high level. As the season went on they became more connected and this created more success on the field.Â
Learning how to play the game the right way was a huge focus for this group. Their growth and development of the mental side of the game stimulated a higher drive for success. As the season progressed they began to play at a higher level, compiling an 11-10 record. Through the month of April they won 7 of the 10 games they played. This includes sweeping IMG Blue in 2 games while outscoring them 17-6.Â
The Lions saw success in all facets of their game. In 21 games the pitching staff limited their opponents to a .224 BAA. Several pitchers ended the season with an ERA below 1 (Bellmore, Meccage, Curbelo). The pitching staff as a whole went out and competed each game with a focus that was exciting to watch. Defensively the team turned 10 double plays and provided clutch defense in big moments. No moment was too big for this team and that's a credit to the connectivity within the program.
Offensively there were 4 starters who hit above .300 this year. However, up and down the lineup there were countless contributions this season. In the last game of the season against Kewsick Christian the bottom of the lineup was the spark that got things going. In the top of the 7th in a 4-4 game Kyler Meccage (8th grader) hit a leadoff double. Following this with 2 QUABs, loaded the bases for Anthony Mejias. Mejias then followed suit with a grand slam to secure the 8-4 win for the Lions. This highlight is a reflection of the drive and persistence within this team. Applying the insights they made this spring into their offseason work will continue to push their game to a higher level.Â
Several players were recognized for their commitment and development during their time here. The awards were - the Lion's Legacy Award, the Most Valuable Player, and the Most Improved Player.Â
The Lion's Legacy Award was presented to the athlete who embodies what it means to be a Lion. He embraces our core values in his daily life and naturally encourages others to follow his steps. This athlete goes above and beyond in everything he does without seeking any recognition. This year's Lion's Legacy recipient is Evan Okuhara. Evan played many roles throughout the year. However, his biggest role can't be seen through his stats or contributions on the field. Instead it's seen through his daily actions and the intentionality he puts into everything he does. Evan's energy and drive is contagious and it motivates everyone around him. He embodies what it means to be a Lion on and off the field.Â
The Most Valuable Player went to the player who was invaluable to the success and growth of the team. This player provided key contributions on all sides of the ball. This year's Most Valuable Player was awarded to Anthony Mejias. Anthony provided a consistent presence on both sides of the ball. His demeanor and approach at the plate made him an offensive spark at the top of the lineup. He hit .314 on the year with 20 hits and stole 100% of the bases he attempted. Defensively he was a steady glove that made the great plays look routine. Anthony was invaluable to the success of the team and established himself as a leader within the program.Â
The
Most Improved Player showed the most improvement throughout the year in all aspects of his game. This player took advantage of his opportunities and became a key player for the Lions. This year's Most Improved Player was
Jackson Mariano. Jackson's impact this year was vital to the team's success. Offensively he established himself in the top of the lineup and hit .304 on the year. He provided timely hits throughout the year which included 8 extra-base hits. Jackson's success is a reflection of his dedication and work ethic.
